Joe Don Baker is Mitchell, a hard-nosed, soft-bellied cop with an affinity for porn and Schlitz. His latest assignment has him engaging in no-speed car chases, yelling at children, shooting at innocents and sloppily harassing Linda Evans. A sleazy, incompetent detective tries to simultaneously take down heroin dealers and a socialite who murdered a burglar. I have viewed this travesty of American cinema, and can confidently say that if given the option, I would rather jam two ball-point pens in my eyes, then slam my face on the table, rather then sit through this misuse of film. Abandon all hope, ye who press play…. (spoilers)I believe that Mitchell was so bad that even MST3K had problems with it. I counted several scenes in which Joel and the 'bots said absolutely nothing, probably because they were so traumatized by this festering boil of a movie. Joe Don Baker plays the eponymous Mitchell-a foul, greasy, nasty cop who is so unlikable that I'm surprised that Linda Evan's hooker would touch him, no matter how much John Saxon's character had paid her to bed him. The inexplicable disappearance of Saxon's character is actually explained-by a five second piece on Mitchell's car radio about the guy being killed in a car accident. If you weren't paying attention you'd spend the rest of the movie wondering what happened to Dini(Saxon's character's name). Not that the rest of the plot makes much sense-something about one thug refusing to take another thug's drug shipment, when in reality he intended to abscond with it. I guess. Mitchell's wardrobe alone is enough to make spots dance in front of your eyes. And the love scene…oh, God! That is an image burned forever on the back of my retinas. Especially the part where one of them says in horror "Is that VASELINE on his nightstand?!" The shudder that passed through me at that point was intense and full of bone deep horror. Mitchell is a movie that could be easily used to induce vomiting.
